Edward didn’t know how much time had passed since he had left the abandoned building. He had been running. Running without looking around, only one thing on his mind: thoughts of his past, which was now encompassing him again like a sinister nightmare. His steps were quick, panicked, he couldn’t stop, couldn’t believe it was all coming back.
Evening swallowed the city, but Edward felt his heart constrict with every step. He was almost out of breath, his breathing heavy and intermittent. But ahead of him, he saw a familiar figure standing near an old tree, arms crossed over his chest.
As Edward drew closer, he recognized the woman. Lisa. She had been a part of his life years ago. She too had been in his dark past, one of the people he had once done irreparable things to. Her eyes were full of regret, but also anger, as if she was seeking revenge herself.
– Do you think it’s possible to hide, Edward? – Her voice was cold, with a hint of despair. – You knew it wasn’t. You knew they would find you.
Edward stopped. He couldn’t avoid the meeting. He knew that everything that had happened would now come back to him, and no amount of trying to escape would help. He didn’t know what to do, but he knew his time was running out.
– Have you come to help me? – He asked, not even expecting an answer.
Lisa only grinned.
– I came to close this debt. You thought you were rid of it, but you were wrong.
As soon as she said those words, the world around Edward began to blur. He felt the ground slipping away from under his feet. An ominous whirlwind swirled in his head, and images of the past began to fill his mind-moments he’d rather forget. The fear he had tried to suppress for so long filled his soul again. He didn’t know which was the real enemy: those who were now coming for him, or his own conscience.
